Burghley House

Burghley House

Burghley House, North Façade

JA 2012

  • Burghley House, 1555-1587. The plan-form, the towered west gatehouse, & the external expression of the kitchen & great hall to the east are typically late mediaeval.
  • The columnar chimneys & the attempt at symmetry show Italian Renaissance influence.
  • The obelisk-spire is unique, but typical of the innovative nature of Elizabethan architecture.
